RODRIGUES ISLAND Lucky Escape from Unprecedented Thunderbolts

Whole Night of 30 April 2016

The Summer Season 2015-2016 is phasing out with Thunder, Lightning and Rain in the Southern Indian Ocean. Rodrigues Island experienced the Extreme Atmospheric Phenomenon of an unprecedented nature during the night of Saturday 30 April 2016. Although the Precipitations were moderate-to-average, the rumbling of Thunderbolts was rather frightening.

Rodrigues Island located along Longitude 640 South and Latitude 200 East, is one of the three Mascarene Islands-Reunion and Mauritius. Besides, it is an Autonomous Territory of the Republic of Mauritius and is about 500 km Eastwards of the latter. Moreover, it forms part of the South-West Indian Ocean Basin. The capital is Port Mathurin found along the West coast.

Check out the location with Google Earth, click here.

Mauritius was under Extreme Weather Conditions (localized) on 28, 30 April and 01 May 2016. Thunderbolts of very rare nature started flashing as from 7.00 pm on Thursday 28 April 2016 and continued almost whole night. Precipitations to the amount of 125.2 mm were recorded in Belle Mare in the East of Mauritius and above 90 mm in a few other areas. In other words, it was an Extreme Weather Event, so much so that the Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS) had to issue a Heavy Rain Warning. In fact, it was in line with the WMO Protocol. Eventually, the Minister of Education was obliged to release a communique mentioning the keeping of all schools closed on Friday 29 April 2016.

On Saturday 30 April the maximum Rains reached 113.3 mm mainly in the Southern parts and to 146.0 mm on Sunday 01 May 2016.

IMPACTS

Rodrigues is exposed to almost all the variables of Climate and Weather which prevail in the Southern Indian Ocean. The Temperature varied beween 300-340 Celsius (reaching a peak of 370 C last month) and Humidity on the high side-99%. As explained in previous and other articles, that when the Cloud bands coming from the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) fuse with those of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and/or with those from the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO)  Disasters: Cyclones and Floods are inevitable.  Lots of Convection take place at this junction and the Rain Clouds make landfall on the land or in the open sea.  According to the Satellite Image, only the ITCZ and ACC interacted,  'The MJO signal has been incoherent during the past week.'... NOAA/CPC update-26 April 2016.

The Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS) does not appear to understand this explanation. Moreover, there is no Innovation as Cloud Observations from the Ground and introduction of Traditional, Indigenous and Local Knowldege/ Practices. Besides, there are more than a dozen loopholes in this NHMS of Vacoas, which is unwilling to address.

Rodrigues Island fell on this track , whereon Precipitations occurred during whole night of  Saturday 30 April 2016.

Cloud Observations from the Ground of Mauritius already indicated the approach of Rain and Cyclone as from 26 April 2016. See picture.  The bands of Cumulus and Cumulonimbus Clouds have continued to converge during 26 to 30 April in the South-West Indian Ocean. Thunderbolts started in Rodrigues, on Saturday 30 April 2016, coincidentally, at 7.00 pm until around 10.30 pm. Rainfalls continued even during Sunday 01 May. No Warning was issued by the Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS). However, moderate-to-average Rainfall was recorded by the Meteorological Station of Pointe Canon, Rodrigues:

Pointe Canon- 44.8 mm; Plaine Corail- 32.2 mm and Patate Theophile- 23 mm.

According to one source, ‘the Thunderbolts were rumbling with such intensity, that it seemed as if it was never heard before.’ The local media announced that a new born of 26 days died out of ‘heart failure’. The most striking fact was that the electricity network underwent a black out whole night. Repairs and resupply took almost whole of the following day.

The Clouds uploaded below have been named in accordance with the International Cloud Atlas, Volume II, World Metorological Organization.

Rodrigues had a lucky escape

The Extreme Weather Event in Rodrigues, just like that of Mauritius, occurred during the night. Had it taken place during a week day, perhaps the risks of disasters would have struck the student population-  the most vulnerable citizens. Moreover, the topography of the small island is very hilly and erosion prone. Verify with Google Earth here.

Satellite Imagery shows that most of the Cloud Bands moved towards the south of the island and on the open sea. Had the main ones passed over the island, the impact of the Precipitations would have been disastrous. Rodrigues had a really Lucky Escape. Who dares to say that the El Nino is in the Neutral Phase?
