South-West Indian Ocean Monsoon System-

Earlier, Enhanced and Elongated-

Torrential Rain-Another Perfect Prediction

(Final update after 15 May 2018)

Mention has been made in the ‘Weather and Summer Season 2017-2018’: “The Weather Systems, forming and evolving in the Southern Indian Ocean Basin, have undergone significant changes. The Patterns of previous years do not seem to be consistent. Meteorologists, Forecasters and Scientists are obliged to do their homework competently.”

Furthermore, the Southern Hemisphere of the Indian Ocean appears, no doubt, to develop some particular Dynamism in terms of Cyclones and Rainfalls. The Dynamics of Climate, Weather and Hydrology are crystal clear during the Summer Season 2017-2018. A series of Cyclones: AVAIRVINBERGUITTA and a trail of Precipitations in Madagascar, Reunion, Comoros, Mayotte, Rodrigues and Mauritius have evolved since New Year 2018. All these Weather Events have caused lots of Disasters in the respective Islands. They also prove that the South-West Indian Ocean Monsoon System (SWIOMS) is, too, Active and is prevailing in an Enhanced Phase. Besides, it has made an onset Earlier than other seasons. It also seems to have an Elongated lifespan, as its ‘peak is still ahead’, as mentioned in the last article: 'Tropical Disturbance 99S INVEST-Mozambique Channel'

The Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS) issued a ‘TORRENTIAL RAIN WARNING’ for Mauritius at 4.35 am Thursday 25 January 2018.

[[[ Forecast Bulletin – Mauritius

A) A torrentiel rain warning is in force in Mauritius.

B) The atmosperic condition remains moist and unstable over our region, thus conducive for the formation of active clouds over the island.

Cloudy to overcast over the island this morning and during the day with scattered showers. The showers will be moderate to heavy at times with thunderstorms.]]]

 The MMS explained the occurrence of the Torrential Rain because of the ‘Line of Convergence’. See synoptic chart.

However, the Warning was waived by the MMS at 10.00 hours today 25 January 2018 itself and almost all activities resumed gradually. It should be noted that various localities were showered with more than 100 mm of Rains.

  • Mon Loisir recorded 166.2 mm
  • Albion-126 mm;
  • Plaisance-106.6 mm and Others lesser.

Almost the whole population witnessed a nightmarish long period with unprecedented Thunderbolts, Lightning and Rain. This Extreme Weather Event started as from 12.07 pm on Wednesday 24 January until 5.00 am on Thursday 25 January 2018.

The impacts were as follows: one hillside concrete building collapsed on another and 3 persons of same family got trapped inside. Luckily, they were rescued safely after a few hours of struggle by the Emergency Task Force. Hundreds of houses, commercial buildings and public places in various localities were inundated by 3-4 feet of Rain Water, causing lots of material damages. Power network and poles were struck by Lightning which damaged 13 transmitters. More than 2,000 households were thus under blackout. Many Roads were flooded obstructing movement of vehicles. All public offices, schools and private sector business were kept closed until the Warning was waived at 10.00 hours today.
