Weather and Cyclone Names for Summer Season 2017-2018

Southern Indian Ocean Basin

(Pl Wait, Uploading is Still ON)

The Weather Systems, forming and evolving in the Southern Indian Ocean Basin, have undergone significant changes. The Patterns of previous years do not seem to be consistent. Meteorologists, Forecasters and Scientists are obliged to do their homework competently. 01 November marks, officially, the beginning of Summer Season in the South-West Indian Ocean. However, as at date, Cyclogenesis have been signalled rather timidly, at local, regional and international levels. Nevertheless, the Summer Outlook 2016-17’ released by KANHYE.COM is a Record in Prediction of Weather on Medium Term basis. Refer to article.

Cyclone Names for Season 2017-2018 for South-West Indian Ocean

Cyclone names bear male and/or female identities. There are 14 countries, found in the Zone of the South-West Indian Ocean, which provide collectively the names of all cyclones:

Botswana, Comoros, France (Reunion), Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

Tropical Cyclones which form as from Longitude 900 East to Longitude 550 East are named by the Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS)-the Sub-Regional Tropical Cyclone Advisory Centre (SRTCAC). Those which take birth along Longitude 550 East to 350 East are in the AOR of Madagascar-another SRTCAC, which baptises them.

Météo-France-Réunion (MFR) is the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RSMC) for the South-West Indian Ocean Basin. It gives Advisories and Warnings to all the countries located in this Zone, regarding all Weather Systems which form and evlove. However, MFR has no mandate to name any cyclone, though it provides the names. Yet, MFR has the right to set a numerical name for Tropical Disturbances and Depressions. This is so, just for the sake of identification and for scientific purposes. Example is ‘01-20172018’. See articles in this Website.

NB: All cyclones which move from the Area of Responsibility (AOR) of Australia to the SWIO, continue to bear the same name as baptised by A-Bureau of Meteorology (ABOM). An example is Very Intense Tropical Cyclone BRUCE (20 December 2013).

The Summer Season starts, officially, as from 01 November and ends by end of April, the following year. Nevertheless, a Cyclone may also form and evolve in Winter and as such constitutes a phenomenon, like Cyclone KEUNA (06-07 June 2012). They may also be born before the season as an Early Phenomenon, like ANAIS (17 October 2012).
