Another WAVE of COVID 19 and VARIANTS (5,957 CASES) just after the release of sanitary measures on 01 July 2022.
The Minister of Health and Wellness of Mauritius gave the following information during the Parliamentary Questions at the National Assembly session of 19 July 2022:
Dr. Jagutpal (Minister): Mr Deputy Speaker, Sir, from–
(i) 1 to 7 July 2022, a total of 2,240 cases of COVID-19 were reported,
(ii) from 8 to 14 July 2022 a total of 3,717 cases were reported.
In reply to part (a) (i) of the question, 45 patients were admitted from 01 to 08 July and 58 patients from 09 to 14 July.
Mr Deputy Speaker, Sir, in reply to part (a)(ii) of the question, 3 patients have passed away as a consequence of COVID-19 from 01 to 07 July. There has been no reported case of death directly related to COVID-19 during the week of 08 to 14 July 2022.
Mr Deputy Speaker, Sir, in reply to part (b) of the question, the PCR sequential analysis is carried out on positive cases since strain monitoring is still on-going in the country. The last sequencing results on 118 samples collected between 29 May to 23 June were as follows –

During the week of 4 to 10 July 2022, over 5.7 million new cases were reported, a 6% increase compared to the previous week. The number of new weekly deaths was similar to that of the previous week, with over 9800 fatalities reported. As of 10 July 2022, just under 553 million confirmed cases and over 6.3 million deaths have been reported globally.}}}

Prime Minister PK Jugnauth announced live on the MBC Tv on 28 June 2022, that the sanitary restrictions concerning COVID 19 will be softened as from Friday 01 July 2022.
There is no more any legal obligation to wear a mask in public, except in any medical institution (public and private), any home, airport or sea port terminal.
Mask must is recommended to be worn in closed public places, in public meetings, by senior citizens, those having breathing problems, feverish and coughs.
Mask wearing, ventilation and use of sanitizers are recommended.
All socio-religious and economic activities and assemblies are now allowed.
NB: COVID 19 and all its mutants are still prevalent in Mauritius. So, stay safe.

Moderate Tropical Storm BATSIRAI was named by the Mauritius Meteorological Services on Thursday 27 January 2022. It intensified very rapidly into Severe and Intense Tropical Cyclone until 03 February. Cyclone Warning Class 1 was issued for Rodrigues on 29 January and then Classes 1, 2, 3 and 4 for Mauritius. Maximum Gusts at 151 kph and over 100mm reaching 171mm. The Cyclone Warning has been waved this morning 04.00 am, but Heavy Rain, Strong Winds and High Waves Warnings have been maintained. Power and water supply cuts and emergency operations have taken place with fallen trees and electricity poles being damaged and broken.
However, Intense Tropical Cyclone BATSIRAI is now influencing dangerously Reunion Sister Island since yesterday with similar disasters and Rainfalls reaching 234 to 772.8 mm.

“...schools were closed in November 2021, following the sharp rise in COVID-19 cases and as part of efforts to curb the spread of the virus. Remote learning mode, through online platforms and television programmes, was then implemented to run until 31st January 2022, to ensure learning continuity. She explained that an analysis of the sanitary situation allowed the Education Ministry, which was in constant communication with the Health Authorities and the High-Level Committee on COVID-19, to decide to resume classroom-based learning as from February 2022...
Health protocols, including clear hygiene directives of wearing of masks and hand washing and sanitising, together with guidelines on social distancing and staggered schedule would still be in effect to reduce the risk of infection.
Moreover, a COVID-19 testing area would be designated in each school so that the newly created 90-member COVID-19 testing team could be deployed in schools when positive cases are detected to identify new infections. Rooms, where cases are detected, would be cleaned and disinfected on the same day...”
The president of National Communication Committee, Dr .JOOMYE indicated: “that 60% of teaching and non-teaching staff had been vaccinated till date, while the vaccination rate for young people aged 15 to 17 years old was 94% and that for 12-14 years old was 43,6%.”

The first drug, baricitinib, is strongly recommended for patients with severe or critical COVID-19. It is part of a class of drugs called Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors that suppress the overstimulation of the immune system. WHO recommends that it is given with corticosteroids.
Baricitinib is an oral drug, used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. It provides an alternative to other arthritis drugs called Interleukin-6 receptor blockers, recommended by WHO in July 2021.
WHO has also conditionally recommended the use of a monoclonal antibody drug, sotrovimab, for treating mild or moderate COVID-19 in patients who are at high risk of hospitalization. This includes patients who are older, immunocompromised, having underlying conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, and those unvaccinated.
Sotrovimab is an alternative to casirivimab-imdevimab, a monoclonal antibody cocktail recommended by WHO in September 2021. Studies are ongoing on the effectiveness of monoclonal antibodies against Omicron but early laboratory studies show that sotrovimab retains its activity.
The panel of experts developing the guidelines also looked at two other drugs for severe and critical COVID-19: ruxolitinib and tofacitinib. Given their uncertain effects, WHO made a conditional recommendation against their use.”

“Out of 79 samples collected from 16 to 27 December 2021, 70 are local and nine are imported cases. The results are as follows: 62 cases of the Delta variant were detected out of which 55 are local and seven imported cases; and, 17 cases of the Omicron variant were detected out of which 15 are local and two are imported cases.”

Prime Minister PK Jugnauth announced on the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation Television on Thursday 11 November night that, stricter conditions have been applied at public levels because of persistent high increase of COVID 19 Contaminations.
- Assembly of a maximum of 50 persons are now allowed in funerals and weddings, but only 10 at prayers.
- Swimming activities at beaches are permitted without pic-nicking.
- Gymnasiums, restaurants and food courts accessible to only fully-vaccinated persons.
- Race horsing will continue in-camera but with only 150 employees
- All schools, colleges and universities are closed, except kindergartens.
- Classes will be carried out on line.
- ALL SANITARY PRECAUTIONS ARE REQUIRED BY EVERY ONE.
- These Strict measures will be valid from 06.00 hours Friday 12 November until Monday 13 December 2021.
