FUNANI and GELENA Moderate Tropical Twin Storms

Trigger Hazardous Situations for Mascarene Islands

Cyclone Warning Class 2 for Rodrigues.

Mention has been made regarding the formation on 05 November 2018 and its eventual naming as Moderate Tropical Storm ALCIDE on two days later, that there are many indication for a Dynamic Summer Season 2018-2019 for the South Indian Ocean. BOUCHERA was named on 10 November 2018 and KENANGA was baptized on 15 December 2018 and both escaped from the region of Indonesia. CILIDA was named on 19 December 2018. DESMOND started its life on 20 January 2019 and EKETSANG was born on 24 January 2019, both being named by Météo-Madagascar.

FUNANI Moderate Tropical Storm was named by Mauritius Meteorological Services on 05 February 2019 and Météo-Madagascar baptized GELENA Moderate Tropical Storm on same day. Both Twins have intensified into Severe Tropical Storms and appear to be threats for Rodrigues, Mauritius and Reunion, with a slight probability for Madagascar. Rodrigues was already under Cyclone Warning Class I on 05 February and the Warning has been upgraded to Class II today. See the picture of the 'Monstrous Octopus-Like' FUNANI.

All these 8 Weather Systems within a short span and their very rapid evolution crystalize the Dynamic Season for South Indian Ocean. Besides, the application of Traditional, Indigenous and Local Knowledge/Practices (TILK/P) already gave these indications.

The Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS) has issued its Warnings on 05 February 2019, as follows:

#Special Weather Bulletin

   Tue, Feb 5, 2019

Info on the low pressure systems to the north northeast of Rodrigues and in the vicinity of Agalega.

Issued at 1400 hours on Tuesday 05 February 2019

1. The tropical disturbance located far to the southwest of Diego Garcia intensified into a tropical depression during last night. At 1000 hours this morning it was centered at about 550 km to the north northeast of Rodrigues. This system will move in a general southwesterly direction at a speed of about 15 km/h, while continuing to intensify and becoming a moderate tropical storm by this evening. It will then be named FUNANI. The tropical storm is expected to recurve towards the south-east as from Wednesday 06 February 2019. On this trajectory
the centre of the storm will approach Rodrigues and is likely to pass at about 160 km to the East Northeast of Rodrigues on Wednesday 06 February around mid-night.

2. Satellite observations shows that the low evolving in the vicinity of Agalega has also gained strength over the night. Latest numerical weather prediction models agree to intensify this system as well and it is very likely that it will reach the moderate tropical storm stage by tomorrow. It will then be named GELENA. The system will move slowly westward at first and then will move towards the south-east, accelerating towards Rodrigues as from Thursday 07 February 2019. This storm is likely to pass very close to both St Brandon and Rodrigues.

Weather at Rodrigues

Clouds associated with the storm are likely to influence the weather at Rodrigues as from Tuesday evening with passing showers. The wind will strengthen gradually as from Wednesday with gusts reaching 90 km/h. As the system continues to approach Rodrigues gusts will increase and become more frequent; there is a probability that cyclonic condition may be felt on Wednesday night.
The Island is likely to be hit a second time on Saturday 09 in the afternoon when cyclonic conditions will again prevail due to the passage of Gelena.

Weather at Mauritius

On the above scenario, the Island will not be directly affected by the first system. There are still
some uncertainties as to the track of the second system and the weather at Mauritius may be influenced by its outer cloud bands as from Thursday evening.

This forecast which is provided as a guideline is based on numerical models with lots of uncertainties. Therefore, there may be quite significant day to day variation.#

After Cyclone Warning Class I for Mauritius and further intensification of GELENA the Warning was upgraded to Class II on Friday 08 February by the Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS).

By that time Severe Tropical Storm FUNANI moved away from Rodrigues Island. However, Cyclone Warning Class II was maintained because of the South-Easterly Track of GELENA, which was cruising18 km/h. It was another potential and direct threat for the population of Rodrigues within just one or two days.

# Third Cyclone Bulletin for Mauritius issued at 16h10 on Friday 08 February 2019.
At 1600 hours, the
intense tropical cyclone GELENA was centered at about 540 km to the  north-north-west of Mauritius, that is in latitude 15.8 degrees South and longitude 55.2 degrees East. It is now moving in a south-easterly direction at an accelerated speed of about 18 km/h. On this trajectory, GELENA is approaching Mauritius and represents a potential threat to the island. Cloud bands associated with the cyclone will cross Mauritius as from tonight and will cause a marked deterioration of the weather over the island.#

All Cyclone Warnings for Mauritius were waived at 16.30 hrs on Saturday 09 February. Yet, Intense Tropical Cyclone GELENA continued to move South-Easterly at an accelerated speed of 22km/h. Sea Swells reaching 5-6 metres were generated by GELENA.

# Swells of 5 to 6 metres generated by intense tropical cyclone 'GELENA' are influencing the sea around Mauritius...

The breaking waves will cause a rise in water level leading to temporary inundation of low-lying areas in Northern and Eastern coasts mainly at high tide times.#

The MMS upgraded Cyclone Warning Class III for Rodrigues at 16.10hrs on Saturday 09 February. Heavy Swells causing Storm Surges, Moderate to Heavy Rains and Gusts of over 100 km/h were forecasts.

On Sunday 10 February GELENA was downgraded to Tropical Cyclone as it Weakened. However, a Special Communique mentioning Heavy Swell Warning was released mentioning Storm Surge generated by the 5-6 metres Waves.

ü  During the passage of Intense Tropical Cyclone GELENA, the population of Mauritius experienced a Phenomenal Weather Event. Local media reported that some people witnessed a Horrible sight of Tornado destroying residential buildings and objects being blown out by the Gusts. Those people did not understand that one or several (mini) Tornadoes usually form part within a cyclonic system. Given that the land mass of Mauritius is very small and is located in the middle of the South-West Indian Ocean, such Meteors may not be easily identifiable. Unfortunately, it is very regrettable to say that neither the Mauritius Meteorological Services nor the Disaster Management Centre have explained these to the public.

ü  Although Mauritius did not undergo serious damages, the population of Rodrigues Island experienced a dual series of threats from FUNANI and GELENA. Local reports mention destruction of vegetation, trees and fruits, including houses. The Response Team of the Disaster Management Centre was sent for the rehabilitation purposes, after the disrupted air traffic.

The passage of 8 Cyclones and the Torrential Rains within a short span of time illustrate the Dynamism of Climate and Weather of the South Indian Ocean. Traditional, Indigenous Knowledge/Practices (TILK/P) indicated rightly such occurrences for this zone, as mentioned in earlier articles in this Website. The exceptional blossoming of fruits-litchis and mangoes in Mauritius gave ample indication for such Weather Events.
